I have lost more family members and friends to various aspects of cancer.
Then I discovered one right inside my left breast, and instead of allowing myself to be plunged into a chasm of depression, decided right from the get-go, to stare the ogre right in its ugly, intimidating eyes. The Other Side of Fear is a metaphor that I’ve chosen that will allow me to experience this debilitating condition without suffering any permanent damage with which it habitually punishes its helpless and hapless victims.
Experiencing Cancer is like embarking on a journey and along your path looms a terrifying object through which you must traverse. Some travelers will die from the fright of the eerie environment, others may summon enough courage provided by a sound medical care to trudge along, only to be crushed by the cruel energy of the object. Still, a few will dare to keep their heads up, never faulting in their path, no matter how frightening and scary the obstacle is.
It is with this group that I count myself to be a lucky member. Cancer has stared me down and almost reduced me to nothing, but with the support of my family, friends and loved ones, I have been able to confront it without any fear. On this unique journey, I come traveling toward the Fear that looms on the other side of my horizon. I confront a force that is as malevolent as it could be laughable.
Modern medicine steals the shine from this Fear.
Priceless family support deprives Cancer of its venom.
My Nigerian upbringing loaded with much self-confidence shielded me from brutal attacks.
Above all, a God-given sense of humor discourages this big bully TNBC, from wreaking any more havoc than it could handle.
For me, the other side of FEAR is HOPE.
The other side of FEAR is the total DEFEAT of cancer
