Imagine a six-foot-four, 230-pound man, crumpled on his living room floor.

Sobbing uncontrollably. Clutching t-shirts belonging to his young daughters. Not able to eat, leave the house, or send a text. Full of shame and self-loathing. Thinking to himself: This isn’t how a man is supposed to deal with cancer.

That was me in the summer of 2018, lost in the depression and anxiety from my diagnosis of stage IV colon cancer.

Now, four years later, I have turned my pain into my purpose. The community I founded, Man Up to Cancer, is designed to lift up men at the lowest points in their journey — men who were in that same spot I was in. The movement includes a website, podcast, annual “Gathering of Wolves” retreat, Chemo Backpack program, and a Facebook group with nearly 2,000 men who are patients, survivors, and caregivers from all types of cancer. We are creating a new path for men impacted by cancer, where no one walks alone.
