Tesco reach £70m milestone for Cancer Research UK – Cancer Research UK

Tesco have raised an incredible £70m to fund life saving cancer research. We’re so grateful for the support and are privileged to have been in partnership with Tesco since 2001.

For more than 20 years Tesco colleagues have remained dedicated and creative in their fundraising. From dancing, cycling, and hosting coffee mornings to taking part in Race for Life and working behind the scenes on the round up at till fundraiser, we continue to be blown away by the support they show us. Every pound they have raised has taken us a step closer to beating cancer.

The best way to beat cancer is to stop it developing in the first place and we know Tesco recognises the importance of cancer prevention. So, we’ve made sure to direct a considerable amount of the £70m raised over the last two decades to projects that help to prevent cancer.

For example, we’re so proud of the huge strides we’ve made in preventing cervical cancer. In the 1990s, our scientists discovered that nearly all cervical cancers are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). This laid the groundwork for the HPV vaccine, which was first offered to girls aged 12 or 13 in 2008. In 2021, our research found the HPV vaccine dramatically reduced cervical cancer rates by almost 90% in these women – showing that the vaccine programme works and saves lives. This means a future where almost no one gets cervical cancer could be a reality for people all over the world.

“Thank you to Tesco’s wonderful colleagues and customers for your dedication to beating cancer. Over 20 years of partnership and £70m is an incredible achievement and one we hope you are incredibly proud of. Together, we’re bringing about a world where everybody lives longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.”

Eve Mitchell, Head of Partnerships Management, Cancer Research UK.

Together we are beating cancer.
