Never in a million years would I have ever thought that in my early 30sI would be getting a colonoscopy. During that time, I did not know what it was and the significance of getting one. However, being diagnosed with colon cancer made me more self-aware of what this procedure was along with what it includes.
Did you know that getting a colonoscopy consists of a strict liquid diet? Well, this is how I began my path before the doctor officially administered the procedure when I was in the hospital. One of the things that I remembered was that all of my liquids were clear and I was only able to eat broth. I had to avoid any solid foods. Additionally, my doctor provided me with a laxative in order to cleanse my digestive system. This helped me have frequent bathroom breaks.
Moreover, the doctor made sure I was highly hydrated and had plenty of rest before the procedure. I must admit, preparing for the colonoscopy was not fun, but I understood that it was important to gain insight into my cancer. For this reason, I followed all the instructions that were provided because my health was my No. 1 priority.
It was a Saturday morning when the doctor conducted my colonoscopy. I was very scared and nervous because I had no idea what to expect. One of the things that I recalled was that I was surrounded by caring, nurturing nurses along with my doctor, which made me feel at ease. They provided me with words of encouragement that made the procedure less uncomfortable. Before I knew it, the procedure was over and only lasted about 30 minutes.
Looking back and thinking about my first colonoscopy, I realized that it was a crucial moment in my life to understand the severity of my cancer. It gave the doctors an outlook of my condition as well as the type of treatment I needed. I am beyond grateful that my cancer did not spread through other parts of my body, and the cancer was stage 2.
To conclude, I will always end my blogs by sharing with you prayers that have helped me throughout this journey. Now, read this prayer with me as I read it with you:
Dear God,
I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude as You have given me the inner strength to overcome all of life’s challenges. I am extremely proud of the person I am becoming. Thank You for my healing scars because it is a representation that I am a survivor, fighter and warrior. You have taught me to never lose sight and face every obstacle with my head held high. Knowing that You are by my side is all that I need to keep moving forward. Love you always, FOREVER BLESSED!!!
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
