‘Jaws 2’ Actor Dies, Suzanne Sommers Pauses Career due to Cancer and More

Suzanne Sommers put career on hold after focusing on cancer diagnoses.

American actress, Suzanne Sommers, put her career on pause after her most recent cancer diagnosis. Her husband had announced her temporary break from Hollywood in an interview with “Page Six.”

“Suzanne has lived with cancer all her life. In her 20s, she’d also dealt with two hyperplasia … which is the waiting room for cancer,” Sommer’s husband, Alan Hamel told “Page Six.”

On June 6, Sommers received an “all clear” from her doctor, although Hamel explained that they will “now closely monitor everything going forward,” according to “Us Weekly.”

“We decided to put work on the back burner for now and focus on her health,” Hamel explained.

Sommers was initially diagnosed with skin cancer in her 30s. Then, in 2000, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, which was treated with a lumpectomy and radiation.

Sommers has been continuing a healthy lifestyle throughout the years. “I have a new standard of care. I didn’t want chemical poison, I changed my diet, I eat real food, organic food only — if you can pick it, pluck it, milk it or shoot it. I eat buttercream, sour cream, cream cheese, all organic, no hormones. I sleep eight hours a night and I don’t take any drugs,” Sommers told “Us Weekly” in 2018.

Shocked by the cancer return, and no longer having a “worry about cancer,” Sommers explained to Us that she sees her life as “optimal.”

Julie Venables, wife of coach Brent Venables, announces cancer diagnosis.

Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables announces that his wife, Julie, has been diagnosed with breast cancer and has undergone surgery.

Venables was diagnosed on June 16, and received surgery this past Friday. The doctors are still investigating whether she will need more surgeries or treatments.

“It’s been nothing short of amazing the group of people that have helped, whether it’s the doctors or administration, people I work with, our staff, our players, our players’ parents and certainly so many friends and the Sooner nation. We’re hopeful that we got everything, and we maybe can avoid further treatments,” Venables stated, according to ESPN.

“Julie, we got a diagnosis on June 16. It was a knock-you-off-your-feet (diagnosis), one that takes me back to talking to my mother in January 2005 and having a stage 4 conversation. It’s one of those where there’s no blueprint for you to handle that,” Venables told “Sports Illustrated.”

Julie is healing well after surgery, as Brent explained, “She’s tough. As I said, she’s a honey badger. She’s got a medical background as a former nurse. So she already knows the answer to the questions. So get it right doc. So she’s amazing,” according to “Sports Illustrated.”

“Jaws 2” actor, Marc Gilpin, died from cancer.

Marc Gilpin, who was known for his role in “Jaws 2,” recently died of brain cancer.

Marc Gilpin, commonly known for his child acting role in “Jaws 2,” died from glioblastoma, a type of brain cancer, this Saturday in Dallas. His sister, actress Peri Gilpin, announced the news to “The Hollywood Reporter.”

Gilpin was diagnosed in 2022, and his friends later set up a GoFundMe, as he was struggling with financial hardship. Funds were raised to help his family with Gilpin’s medical needs. This April, clinicians found a new growth, and had to prescribe him a stronger chemotherapy regimen.

“Marc is an amazingly strong man and he wants to continue the battle. So do I and our boys (Spencer and Presley). Any parent would be so proud of their kids if you could see how Spencer and Presley are living with this. Their kindness, quick to action, even quicker to forgive when we get snappy that they have displayed is incredible,” Gilpin’s wife, Kaki, said at the time.

Of the two tumors that doctors found, one was in the center of the brain, making it too complex to remove, according to “People.”

Gilpin’s family remained his biggest supporters during this time, as Gilpin’s sister, Peri, explained his relationship with his family. “Kaki and Marc took care of each other with kindness, strength, dignity and invaluable humor. When Marc became ill, Kaki and their boys surrounded Marc with love, hugs, and round the clock support and care,” Gilpin wrote on Instagram.

John Metchie returned to football after experience with cancer.

Houston Texans’ wide receiver, John Metchie, returned to play football after his experience with leukemia, which caused him to miss his entire rookie season last year.

“This entire year has been eventful, for sure. It’s had its ups and downs. But being back on the field feels great. It’s been a long way coming but it definitely feels like a blessing and I feel grateful every day,” Metchie said, according to NBC Sports.

Metchie said that he is feeling better than he ever has, as he explained to NBC Sports this past Thursday. “I feel 110%, actually, I feel better now than I ever did in college, and I feel better than I was before I got diagnosed. So I feel 110%.”

Just months before Metchie’s diagnosis, he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in 2021 during the SEC championship game, according to Fox News. Shortly after this, Metchie questioned whether he would be able to play on the field again.

“I feel like at the beginning stages, of course, you don’t know what’s going to happen or what the future has in store for you. Of course, hope that you can overcome it and play football, but I will probably say the beginning stages. There might have been some doubt,” Metchie explained to Fox News.

“When it comes time to the season, whenever it is, we want him to be his best. Whatever it is, whatever role it is for our team, hopefully, he can help us win games,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said about Metchie to Fox News.

Metchie is back in training and healing well, according to NBC Sports.
